Battle of Jewelers throughout the years

29 декабря 2021, 19:30 Дмитрий Татауров

Battle of Jewelers IV, 2016 The bracelet, Evgeny Domrachev (Cherepovets, Russia).

There is a popular expression: we all come from childhood. I'm lucky because as a child I constantly saw how my father was engaged in stone cutting workshop, made jewelry. And when he left there, we with friends sat down at the workbench and saw themselves as future jewelers.
I received a fundamental education at Ural Federal University in the specialty Physics of Metals.

Knowledge of crystallography, heat treatment and metal casting processes is very useful and helps to work in the jewelry industry.

When social networks began to actively develop, I got the idea to gather all the amateurs and professionals of the jewelry business on one Internet site. This is how the «Typical Jeweler» appeared in 2012.

At first it was a small community, but very quickly the platform gathered a huge number of like-minded people. Now we are actively working to unite jewelers from around the world.

The idea of a jewelry competition

In the first year of the existence of "Typical Jeweler" I got the idea that jewelers should be given the opportunity to show their work, and in the spring of 2013 we held the first competition which I called "Battle of Jewelers". It had 27 participants and one nomination: "Best Jewelry".

And in 2021, almost 500 applications were received in 17 nominations. We ran the first eight competitions without a jury.

Battle of Jewelers III, 2015 Necklace "Stone-cut orchid", Semyon Tkachuk.

All winners were determined by voting in the VKontakte group; in 2021, in the ninth competition, the winners were determined by a jury - 28 members from Russia, the USA, and Japan. The competition is held online, so participation in it does not require financial costs.

All you need is the desire to participate and win. After the start of the pandemic, the competition took on a grand scale.

The level of artworks is simply fantastic, we have discovered many new names of extremely talented jewelers. We plan to hold this competition for more than a decade. In April 2022, we are expecting a thousand jewelers from one hundred countries of the world!

Evolution of the competition

From 2013 to 2017, jewelers of our country were liberated in creativity: larger budgets, more creativity, more interesting orders. All this led to a splash of bright products. From year to year I saw such a tendency: the number of applications in the nomination “Gold jewelry” is decreasing and is increasing in another nomination, “Silver Jewelry”.

This has been the case for the past nine years.

Among the works of foreign jewelers, one can see more non-standard and creative works made of gold. In 2021, many strong works from abroad came to the competition: from Poland, Denmark, Australia, USA, Cuba. It could happen that the final in the most prestigious nomination "Jewelry made of gold" could pass without the Russians at all.

A «Bravo» to a jeweler from St. Petersburg - Rita Briali, for defending the honor of Russia and taking first place, sharing it with a jeweler from San Francisco, Alan Revere.

Traditionally, there were five nominations in our competition: gold, silver, non-precious materials, student products and 3D models. This year we have added new nominations: sketches, enamel, engraving, stone-cutting art - in these nominations Russian jewelers, I am sure, will be able to fight a worthy battle for another decade.

It is interesting to see how the competition will change with the arrival of Asian jewelers from Hong Kong, China and Japan.

The whole world is waiting for the jubilee international jewelry competition "Battle of Jewelers X" - April 1, 2022! There we should see serious battles between different countries, continents, only in the field of jewelry.

Where will it lead?

Our competition is now being awaited, whole departments of students of specialized jewelry universities are counting the days and purposefully preparing for it. There is growing attention from the media, opinion leaders and experts in the Russian jewelry industry.

Our partners include Moscow

State University, the Ministry of Culture of the Sverdlovsk Region; the jury includes representatives of the State Hermitage; the famous artist-jeweler Ilgiz Fazulzyanov supports the competition. This year we have foreign partners - Miami Jewelery School from the USA and in the jury - Japanese jeweler and designer Akiko Shinzanto.

Battle of Jewelers IX, 2021 Brooch "Key of the Undead". Armen Vardapetyan (Moscow, Russia)

The competition has grown almost twenty times. And this is not the limit. I see unlimited growth potential due to the foreign jewelers. I won’t be surprised if one day we receive 5,000 or even 10,000 applications from all two hundred countries of the world.
